1. Protect your whites.
In watercolor, light comes from the paper itself. Plan ahead and leave areas unpainted to create highlights, whites, and glowing light.
2. Water controls value.
More water creates lighter, airier washes. Less water creates darker, richer values. Adjust water before adding more pigment.
3. Neutralize with complements.
Mixing complementary colors softens intensity and creates more natural, complex neutrals than using black alone.
4. Let brush direction follow form.
Move your brush in the same direction as the object you’re painting. Brushwork reinforces shape, movement, and structure.
5. Finish with intentional dark accents.
A few well-placed dark values at the end bring contrast, depth, and a full value range to your painting.
